Utility Bridges Project

Rio Tinto Alcan Primary Metal – British Columbia (RTA) owns and operates the aluminum plant in Kitimat, BC.

  • BUSINESS PROBLEM SOLVED

In order to improve production and ensure future success and sustainability, Rio Tinto embarked on a multibillion dollar Modernization Project which cut emissions by half.
  • TECHNICAL PROBLEM SOLVED

As part of the Kitimat Modernization Project, the demolition of the existing main conveyor gallery was required, including a relocation of a number of piped services and an alternate power supply feed.  This project intent was to provide new utility bridges and piping in order that the required demolition of the existing conveyor gallery could proceed.  Above ground steam and condensate piping was also required to be relocated to a new covered pipe trench under the road.
  • WHAT WE DID

Design of new utility bridge, incorporating all contained process and electrical services, with consideration to current and modified plant layout, environmental conditions, switchover required from existing bridge cited for demolition to operation via new bridge.  The piping design included code review by stress analysis and pipe registration submission.  Temec provided procurement services consisting of development of construction tender packages.
